鎊飪腦瞳 GSP

The Governors Scholars Program began in the summer of 1983 as an academic enrichment program to meet the needs of the Commonwealths 230 highest-achieving rising seniors. A year after its founding, The New York Times called it an educational utopia. Since that time, it has grown in both numbers and prestige. This summer, approximately 1050 scholars will spend five weeks on one of three GSP host campuses: 鎊飪腦瞳 in Danville, Morehead State University in Morehead, and Murray State University in Murray.

The mission of the Governors Scholars Program is to enhance Kentuckys next generation of civic and economic leaders. This is accomplished by providing intellectual and personal growth in a challenging, non-traditional program whose curriculum and philosophy is rooted in the rich tradition of the liberal arts. The Program empowers students to think more creatively than they are able to do in a regular classroom setting, to collaborate with each other and their teachers, and to take an integrative, rather than a narrowly disciplined, approach to problems and issues.

Residential Life

One of the most important aspects of the Program is the opportunity for the student to become an active member in a living/learning environment an opportunity that offers the freedom to grow and develop as an individual and that will demand the exercise of responsibilities that accompany and ensure that freedom. The student will be expected to contribute to the community and to interact with fellow students, faculty, and staff in building a cooperative, stimulating, and productive community of scholars.

The curriculum will be supplemented and enriched by community experiences, residential life programming, and other opportunities to engage with the community outside of the classroom.

On Campus Curriculum

The curriculum provides opportunities to develop both general and specific intellectual skills and talents through student participation in the following:
Focus Area-Courses that will allow a student to pursue a topic in-depth as a member of a small group stressing the development of ideas in the chosen discipline, with the option of additional independent study. Focus Areas meet daily for one and a half to two hours. For a complete listing of Focus Areas offered, see the GSP website.

General Studies- Classes the emphasize inquiry, service-learning, community leadership, and resolution development.
Leadership Seminar- This leadership seminar, co-led by a Resident Advisor and by a faculty member, meets daily for one and a half to two hours. It stresses issues of personal development faced by scholars, including values, interpersonal relationships, career choices, and maximizing the value of their senior year in high school.

Scholars will be charged $50.00 for losing a room key during the program or not returning the room key at the end of the program. For security reasons, each time a key is lost, the key core on the door must be changed. The charge of $50.00 each time a key is lost or not returned helps defray this replacement cost. A lost ID card will be replaced at a $25.00 charge.

  • Clothes for classes: casual, comfortable summer clothes, such as jeans, shorts, skirts, T-shirts, blouses, sport shirts; a skirt or long pants may be necessary for some field trips. Clothing should be neat, comfortable, and modest. Avoid clothing that reveals midriffs, backs, or undergarments, shorts that are too short, and low-cut tops. Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times.
  • Raincoat and/or umbrella; hiking clothes and shoes for some field trips (be sure to include a long-sleeved shirt).
  • Dress clothes for religious services, if planning to attend, and such special events as final banquet (i.e., dress shirts, slacks, skirts, and/or dresses).
  • Sleepwear/robe/shower shoes: bathrooms will be shared with other scholars.
  • Athletic equipment and clothes: for example-tennis racket, running shoes,  swimsuit, baseball/softball glove.
  • Reusable water bottle.
  • Personal toiletries: toothbrush and toothpaste, soap/body wash, toilet paper, shaving equipment, shampoo, deodorant; a minimum of 2 bath towels and a washcloth (four or more would make laundry easier); a bathmat, if desired.
  • Prescription and/or over the counter medication (i.e., ibuprofen, tums).
    Basic cleaning supplies.
  • Bed linens: 2 twin sheets (extra-long) and 2 pillowcases (doubling would make laundry easier). Each room has extra-long twin size beds. In addition, you will need a pillow, a blanket and, if you want one, a bedspread.
  • Hangers for your clothes; laundry bag/basket and laundry detergent.
  • Musical instruments, if you plan to practice or perform. Pianos will be available.

  • Alarm clock and/or simple wristwatch. Students should not plan to use cell phones or smart watches to determine time outside of residence hall rooms.
  • Camera and things to read during spare time. Students should not plan to use their cell phones as cameras.

  • Each student will have a private closet in their room.  While we dont anticipate that there will be any real problem with theft, in a large community living situation such as ours, things may disappear.  We would discourage students from bringing anything valuable (jewelry, large amounts of cash, expensive stereo equipment, etc.) with them this summer. The Governor's Scholars Program can assume no liability for loss or damage of personal items.
  • TV SETS, PERSONAL COMPUTERS, TABLETS AND OTHER ELECTRONIC ITEMS ARE NOT ALLOWED.  DO NOT BRING THEM!  Cell phones will only be permitted in the residence hall rooms.

  • Note to Parents and Guardians:
Please keep in mind that there will be a Family Day at the end of your scholars second week on campus.  This is an excellent time to replenish scholars stocks of snack food, spending money, clothing, or any items that may have initially been forgotten.  Scholars may also receive items by mail throughout the Program.  As a result, it is not necessary to bring supplies for the entire five weeks on Opening Day.
